For centuries witches have captured our cultural imagination. Often seen as outcasts, witches have long been the symbol for resistance, change, and independence. This month we’re bringing witchcraft and literary resistance together.

Featuring:

  • Witchcraft: A Very Short Introduction by Malcolm Gaskill
    • While we love the imaginary witches of TV and film, witchcraft is a very ancient practice that spans centuries. If you were independent or opinionated, you could be targeted for witchcraft, a very serious criminal offense. Many women, and some men, were caught up in the political and social patriarchy that targeted the feminine body and spirit for no reason other than being different. To practice witchcraft as a healer, midwife, or wise woman was a dangerous act of resistance that could save lives, but could cost a person their own life. This portable book doesn’t cover everything you need to know about witchcraft, but we hope it’s a start to a beautiful journey of understanding it a bit more.
  • Brainscan Zine, Issue #33, “An Exploration of Secular Witchcraft” by Alex Wrekk
    • Alex Wrekk, has been publishing Brainscan Zine for 20 years. For the first time, Wrekk discusses their relationship to witchcraft and their experiences in finding personal growth and fulfillment through their practices. This zine isn’t a “how-to” guide, but a deeply introspective narrative about finding joy in being a witch.

    • Who better to represent witchy resistance than the incomparable Elphaba Thropp? Taking on the image of “wickedness” in order to stand up to the Wizard and free the Animals in Oz, this pin is a reminder that doing the right thing can be lonely at times. Know that Elphie is cheering you on so you can “defy gravity” in your own way
